Slovenia’s Presidency of WAPES
At the General Assembly of the World Association of Public Employment Services (WAPES) on 6 May 2025, the Employment Service of Slovenia was elected as President of the Association for the next three years.
Greta Metka Barbo Skerbinc, Director General of the Slovenian Employment Service, has thus taken the lead of this important international organisation, which was established in 1988 with the aim of promoting the exchange of knowledge, experience, and best practices among national employment services from what is now 85 countries worldwide.
This is a milestone moment, confirming the international recognition of Slovenia’s public employment service and its activities in the labour market both at home and abroad.
WAPES is an international non-governmental organisation, established under the auspices of the International Labour Organization (ILO), with the purpose of connecting and strengthening cooperation between public employment services across the globe.
Today, WAPES brings together members from all five continents and serves as a key platform for the development and transfer of best practices in the field of labour markets.
With the election of Slovenia's employment service to the presidency of WAPES, Slovenia demonstrates that it is not merely an observer, but a co-creator of global labour market trends.
The presidency brings the opportunity to influence global employment policy directions, enhance the reputation of Slovenian professional expertise, and promote Slovenian best practices at the highest level.
»This is not only a recognition of the work, visibility, and success of our Employment Service, but also a remarkable opportunity for the future — to contribute with our knowledge and values to the global development of fairer, more inclusive, and resilient labour markets,« said Greta Metka Barbo Skerbinc, Director General of the Employment Service.
»We have proven that even a small institution with a clear vision, professionalism, and dedication can step into the spotlight and take on a leadership role. Holding the WAPES presidency also brings responsibility for the future of work and employment — not just in Slovenia, but around the world.«
Our sincere congratulations to our Director General for assuming such an important role — one not previously seen in the 125-year history of public employment services in Slovenia.
