Guidance in a global world – Understanding the individual as a holistic whole

Plenarno predavanje v angleškem jeziku (title of conference lecture)

The COVID-19 has caused much turbulence in our societies across the whole world. It has affected our daily lives and brought an increasing insecurity to many of us. In 2020, more people have been confronted by unexpected changes such as sudden unemployment, losses of their businesses, difficulties to complete their studies, mental health problems emerging, and much more. All this has created a growing need for guidance and counselling and other types of support. There are weak signals around that may indicate potential new service needs among citizens of all ages. Those signals are not necessarily fully detected and addressed by the existing service systems.

Thus, it becomes crucial to develop guidance and support services in a changing operational environment and to specifically address the new types of challenges that derive from the impact of the corona virus on young and adult people's lives today. Strengthening cross-sectoral service systems (incl. communities of practice, effective networks), upskilling staff's competences as well as developing tools and methods are the basis for needs-based service delivery. The outcome should be that people's well-being and ability to plan their own future improve and their experience of inclusion increases.

The presentation will discuss the above issues within a global context, yet putting an emphasis on the individual and his/her agency and resilience. A research-based digital service and support need indicator called CREAR that has been developed in Finland will be introduced. CREAR produces information about problems linked to study progress (i.e. learning ability, resilience and agency) as well as to transition to further education or working life (i.e. career management and employability skills). The CREAR acronym originates from Career, Resilience, Education, Agency and Readiness.
