| An international conference “The
Strategic Planning of the Integration of the Underprivileged on the Labour Market” Conference took place in Alsopahok, Hungary, from 10 to 12 April
2000. It was intended to find solutions for the problems Hungarian Romas encounter,
particularly their social and employment problems. Slovenia was represented by a
representative from the Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Affairs, an employee from
the Novo mesto regional office of the Employment Service of Slovenia and the “B&Z”
counselling company.
Although the conference did not tackle the problems which
Slovenia faces with Roma population, it was important as contemporary European models of
coping with the problems of ethnic groups were presented. An agreement was reached to
establish an information network entitled ROMANET to unite all those who deal with Roma
population. Slovenia established contacts with the ROMANET representatives as well.
The Slovene Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Affairs
prepared a new programme Equal employment possibilities for Romas. With the help of
the Slovene Employment Service, fifteen programmes of public works have been taking place
(in which Romas participate) in Dolenjska and Bela Krajina which are, just like Prekmurje,
the Slovene regions with the largest Roma population.
