The ESS issued a total of 34,579 work permits in 2005. The total number of valid work permits was almost 4,000 higher at the end of December 2005 than in December 2004, with the largest increase in personal work permits (from 22,712 to 25,782). The number of personal work permits increased due to the provisions of the Employment and Work of Aliens Act, which lays down substantially more favourable and wider provisions regarding the possibility of acquiring permits. Since Slovenia joined the EU, the ESS has also had the additional task of recording workers from other EU members with which Slovenia has established a free flow of workers. In 2005 there was a total of 5,635 registrations of workers from the EU, of which there were 1,634 registrations of employment, 441 registrations of individual work and 3,560 registrations of workers providing services.
